Ever wondered what goes on at our base camps when students are out backpacking and rafting?
More outdoor learning! Many people don’t realize that COBS partners with local non-profits and schools for outdoor learning adventures. We help groups connect and build leadership skills so that they can return to their communities with close friendships and the confidence to be bold leaders.
This past year, we welcomed several new and returning friends (28 groups in total!) to our base camps in Moab and Leadville. Here’s a snapshot of some of our group adventures from 2023!
Girls Ruling the Rockwall
We facilitated two exciting days of hiking and climbing with the Girls Rule the World program through the Rocky Mountain Welcome Center. The center is a non-profit that fosters intercultural learning and integration among immigrants, refugees, and Colorado receiving communities.
Career Pathfinding on the Trails
A group of Great Outdoors Colorado Interns got together at our Leadville base camp for a weekend of reflection and leadership development. Here’s what Events and Marketing Intern, David Whittle, had to say about the experience:
“For me, the COBS program fostered an emotional connection to what it means to be an outdoor steward and helped me learn how I work in a team and my style of leadership…I’m still learning and growing in my life and career, and COBS was a crucial part in helping me take a step back from the distractions of the everyday world to be present with finding my passion!” Read David’s full story
Creekside Exploring in Leadville
Our Leadville base camp is an incredible science classroom, especially for learning about native ecosystems! That’s why we partnered with the Cottonwood Institute and Lincoln Hills who spent time on our base camping, fishing, bug catching, and learning about the local watershed. Read their full story.
Building Conexión while Camping
In collaboration with Convivir Colorado and Latino Outdoors, we welcomed youth onto our base camp for a weekend of camping and bonding this summer. Convivir is a leadership program for immigrant, refugee, and first-generation youth. Here’s what they had to say about their experience:
“Huge shoutout to Latino Outdoor and Outward Bound for making our first camping field trip an amazing experience! Not only was it a celebration to wrap up our summer program, but it was also an opportunity for all of us to bond!”
We can’t wait to embark on another year of community building at our base camps in Leadville and Moab! Interested in partnering with us? Contact [email protected] or learn more about our programs for youth groups and business professionals.
