September 26, 2014–
On September 6 and 7, we had the rare treat to bring together legacy staff, alumni, and trustees from so many decades of our school’s history to celebrate the repurchase of our historic Marble basecamp. We celebrated together, with over 110 guests from Colorado, California, Washington, Utah, DC, and beyond. This basecamp was the first Outward Bound basecamp in the United States, founded in 1962 and we are so excited to have it back where it belongs: with the Colorado Outward Bound School.
If you couldn’t be there in person, don’t worry. We put together a video to commemorate the weekend.

Together, we gave the basecamp some much needed TLC during many service projects over the course of the weekend. We painted the staff apartments, the Joe Nold house, and CD house. We built new steps to the bathhouse and finished the ceiling in newly remodeled bathhouse. And, thanks to the complete replacement of the sewer system last fall, we have a beautifully functioning basecamp.
Perhaps the most important part of the weekend were the stories shared about the school’s past and the vision for COBS in the future. We heard from Chuck Froelicher, school founder, and from the Gates and Brown families, the children of our founding trustees. Donors, legacy staff, and alumni chimed in with their stories, too.
The energy, enthusiasm, stories and connections moved us all to tears at many points. Thanks to all who made this momentous occasion possible and to those who were able to join us in Marble!
